AZSW Endorses Johnson’s Re-Election Campaign for Tempe Union Governing Board

Posted under Candidates, Vote for Education by kspidel

I am pleased to announce that I am a candidate for re-election to the Tempe Union High School District Governing Board in the November election.  I am a former ASU teacher and administrator and have lived in the District for 38 years.  I am the parent of four children who attended and graduated from our public schools.

I have a lifelong passion for children, families and public education.  I truly believe that the future of our country lies in the strength of our local public schools.

Serving on the High School Board has been my first foray into serving in a public office and I have brought to it a strong community service background.  I have previously served terms as President of the Tempe Human Relations Commission, Tempe Community Action Agency and Tempe Community Council.  I have also served on the Boards of Directors of Tempe Leadership, Assistance for Independent Living and The Centers for Habilitation.   My honors for this community service include the ASU’s Alumni Award for Outstanding Service, Tempe Community Council’s Don Carlos Humanitarian Award and Tempe Leadership’s Community Leader of the Year Award.

As a current member of the Tempe Union High School District Governing Board, I am dedicating my knowledge, experience, passion and time to working toward the goal of having our Tempe District high schools be the very best.

I am proud of the leadership and service I have brought to the High School Board in the six years I have served.  For two of those years, I served as Board President and an additional two years as Board Vice-President.   Fiscal responsibility and planning have been of extreme importance to me.   I have chaired the Budget Task Force that included representatives of all stakeholder groups. As Board President, I led the district’s strategic planning process that resulted in a plan that has as its number one goal, “We Will Increase Student Achievement”. This work, along with other areas of focus, has kept the district goal of Excellence in Teaching and Learning in the forefront.

I believe that I am making a strong contribution to the High School Board.  I view this position as a public trust and I will continue to serve with the hard work and thoughtfulness the position deserves.  I will offer the leadership, stability and experience our District needs through the many challenges that lie ahead.
